The Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Lagos proposes innovative new programmes (listed below). The programmes, which are supported financially by NIMASA, are interdisciplinary and designed to equip students for exciting career options and/or advancement in the booming field of maritime and coastal development, port management and development,port management and development, as well as associated areas of coastal and marine tourism.

  1. Master of Maritime Administration & Management (MMAM)
  2. Master of Hydrographic Surveying (MHS)
  3. Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Environmental Studies. 
  4. Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Communication & Navigation.
  5. Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Administration & Management.

Aims & Objectives:

  • To equip candidates with up to date administrative and management knowledge required for a more sustainable operations in the maritime industry.
  • To equip candidates with the knowledge needed to effectively and efficiently administer and manage the specialized technical and commercial components of the maritime industry.
  • To equip candidates with the expertise needed to resolve international maritime problems related to offshore and onshore operational activities anywhere in the world.
  • To contribute graduates towards the growing national need for professionals in the maritime industry.

Programme: Master of Maritime Administration & Management (MMAM)

Mode: Professional Part-Time

Duration: Four Semesters 

Aims & Objectives:

  • To equip graduates with the needed in depth proficiency in Hydrographic surveying that is modern and relevant to the local and regional maritime industry.
  • To equip graduates with knowledge required to assemble and setup hydrographic sensors and scanners and successfully deploy them for productive work;
  • To provide sufficient number of qualified professionals with additional skills.
  • To provide graduates in certain disciplines the oportunity of a career switch through training that ensures meeting the requirements of IHO certifications for CAT A and CAT B.

Programme: PGD in Diploma in Maritime Environmental Studies.

Aims & Objectives:

  • To equip qualified professionals with the needed knowledge of the physical,chemical & biological characteristics of the marine environment and yo train them to acquire the skill to deal with the challenging & dynamic nature of the marine environment in order to ensure a cleaner ocean.
  • To equip students with knowledge of socio-economic & economic aspects of marine and maritime affairs so as to provide them with the skill necessary in understanding the coastal economy.
  • Provide a sufficient number of qualified professionals with additional skills in marine affairs and maritime and marine pollution studies.

Programme: PGD in Maritime Communication & Navigation.

 Duration: Three Semesters 

 Aims & Objectives:

  • To equip qualified professionals with the needed knowledge of communication with other ships of any size or nationality.
  • To equip students with knowledge needed to receive & send urgent maritime safety information.
  • To equip graduates with the expertise to be able to send & receive distress alerts in an emergency to/from rescue coordination centre ashore & nearby ship anywhere in the world.
  • To provide a sufficient number of qualified professionals with additional skills to receive GNSS signal & radio signals from stations for purposes of safe navigation & vessel steering.
  • To meet the growing national need for marine & maritime studies professionals.
