CURRICULUM FOR HIGHER DIPLOMA IN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Introduction

The Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS), the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, has been accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) with the mandate to award Higher Diploma in Supply Chain Management. This curriculum contains details of the programme.

Philosophy

The Higher Diploma in Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Management (the Programme) seeks to provide participants with both foundational principles and practical knowledge in the broad field of Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Management. The programme will focus on domestic and international principles, trends and practices in Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Management. As shown in the modules of study, the programme covers important areas, such as: Supply Chain Management, Production and Operation Management, Contract Management, Global Purchasing, International Transport Management, Financial Management and Global Marketing Management. The programme is based on the course credit system, which offers participants a broad-based learning and qualitative education.

Aim/Objectives

The goal of the Programme lies in the careful combination of courses at teaching and research levels that seek to produce participants possessing core knowledge of the principles and practice of Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Management. It aims at producing persons that are readily able to use international standards in resolving issues and adding values to the practice of Supply Chain Management.

Rationale/ Justification

The programme is designed to: (i) provide training for persons, organisations and associations operating the Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Management Business in Nigeria; (ii) provide consultancy and advisory services directed towards adding value to Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Management system; (iii) undertake studies and research in all the aspects of Logistics and Supply Chain Management; (iv) provide information services that are relevant to the practice of Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Management.

Admission Requirements

In order to be eligible for admission to the Higher Diploma in Supply Chain Management, a candidate must possess the basic O-Level requirements with English and Mathematics obtained at not more than two sittings and at least one of the following qualifications: (a) Ordinary National Diploma(OND); (b) Higher National Diploma (HND); (c) Degree in any discipline; (d) Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) accredited Diploma in Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Management. Note: (i) Holder of OND must have additional Certificate in Freight Forwarding in order to be considered.

Requirements for the Award of Higher Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management

To qualify for the award of Higher Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, a candidate must pass a minimum of thirty-two units (32) of courses including all compulsory courses and one elective course.

Programme Duration

The duration of the programme is two semesters. Each semester runs for a period of 12 weeks of lectures followed by two weeks of examination and two weeks for break. Internship runs for a period of 12 weeks. The programme is expected to be concluded within maximum of 12 calendar months.

Course Description

IMF201 Supply Chain Management

This course aims at equipping the students with necessary knowledge and competence for the practice of SCM. This course deals with the following: Overview of Supply Chain Management, Role and Strategic Importance of SCM, Warehousing, An Integrated Supply Chain Component, Inventory Management, Planning Inventory and Inventory Management Practices, Bullwhip Effect, Information Technology in SCM, Strategic Alliances in Supply Chain Management, Outsourcing Relationships, Models of Alliances, Third Party (3P) and Fourth Party (4P) Logistics Providers, Transportation and Distribution Strategies, Quality Management System in SCM, SCM Performance Management, Control and Strategic Logistics Plan, and Security of Supply Chain. Learning Outcomes At the end of this module, students should be able to differentiate between logistics and supply chain management. This implies they should be able to summarize the supply chain strategies and their applications in different business models, analyse the impacts of inventory with tools like the bull-whip effect on the supply chain management. They should be able to apply trade-off between cost and service to develop simple solutions to supply chain challenges.

IMF202 Contract Management

This course draws the attention of the students to the ingredients of contract in relation to SCM, with a focus on the following: Introduction to Contract Management, CM Team Formation, Developing a Contract Team Plan, Procurement and Contract Management, Administration of Contracts, Managing Risks in Contracts, Tender Evaluation and Performance Management, Project Management Tools, Pre–Qualification of Suppliers, and Termination of Contracts. Learning Outcomes This module should lead the students to understand the fundamentals and the role of contract in supply chains. They should be able to evaluate the effectiveness of a contract management team and successfully craft a contract management plan. They should be able to define the role of procurement in contract management, identify potential risks and alleviate risks in contracts.

IMF203 Production and Operation Management

This course deals with the following: Productions Management and Operations Strategy, the Role of POM in the Production of Goods and Services, Facility and Layout Planning, Capacity Planning, Inventory Management, Forecasting in Operations Management, Designs and Development of Products and Process, JIT Manufacturing and SCM, Productivity, Work Methods and Measurements, Quality Control and Quality Management, Maintenance and Reliability Management. Learning Outcomes Understanding POM should guide the students in choosing most appropriate location(s) and optimise layout for production facilities. This will enable them to demonstrate ability to effectively carry out capacity planning and scheduling of activities and understand the techniques of products’ designs. They should appreciate quality management in production processes and explain the various roles played by ISO, SON, and NAFDAC in quality sustenance. They should understand and be able to apply plant and equipment maintenance scheduling. They should understand the principles of establishing work standards and performance measurement.

IMF204 International Transport Management

As transportation is crucial to SCM, this course considers the various dimensions of transportation and the impact on the practice of SCM. It covers the following: Role of Transportation in Logistics/Supply Chains and the Impact of Transportation on the Economy and the Environment, Global Framework in Transportation, Impact of Trade Agreements on the Choice of Transportation, Global Transport Organisations, Factors Affecting Transportation, Ocean Transportation, Impact of Regulations on Ocean Transportation, Chartering Bulk Ocean Carrier, International Air Transport, Regulatory Framework, Open Skies Agreement and Traffic Freedom, International Air Transportation System, Transport Management System and Distribution Network, Intermodal and Multi-Modal Transportation, Shipper/Carrier Networks Strategies, Pricing Strategies, and New Trends in International Transport Management. Learning Outcomes By the end of this course, students should be able to understand the role of international transportation in supply chain management, and understand the role of intermediaries in international transportation. They should be acquainted with the various modes and methods of pricing in transportation. They should understand the latest global security and safety initiatives in international transportation.

IMF205 Global Purchasing Management

This course addresses the intricacies of purchasing management especially on the global scale. This course deals with the following: Global Procurement and Global Procurement Risk, Global Procurement Organization Structure, Global Procurement Operations, Global Information Management Process, Global Alliances, and Global Strategic Supply Management. Learning Outcomes This course focuses the attention of the students to understand global procurement in the contexts of risks and risk control. It enables them to appreciate return on investments and help them to analyse the development of purchasing strategies specific to development structure and effective management and reporting. They should be able to explain the essence of supply intelligence, and devise strategies to appoint, evaluate, develop and maintain strategic supplies and leverage on these supplies to gain competitive advantage. They should understand the use of MIS and develop its strategic adoption in global procurement organisation.

IMF206 Global Marketing Management

This course focuses on global marketing management and its relevance in SCM. It addresses the following: the Concept of Marketing, Marketing Research, Strategic Marketing Management, Marketing Entry Strategies, Buying Behaviour, Service Marketing, Market Segmentation, and Targeting and Positioning. Learning Outcomes The students should be able to differentiate between marketing driven, sales driven and product driven approaches in an organisation. They should be able to apply the various research methods in marketing research. They should be able to craft simple market entry strategies and differentiate between product and service marketing. They should identify and analyse segmentation principles and develop target marketing and positioning strategies.

IMF207 Financial Management

The success of any organisation or endeavour cannot be divorced from adequacy and management of its finance. This course addresses the following issues: Introduction to Financial Management, Introduction to Risks and Financial Statements, Working Capital Management, Financial Analysis, Business Financing and Business Planning, Investment Appraisal, Corporate Finance and International Financial Management. Learning Outcomes The students should acquire cognate understanding to discuss the scope, tools and role of financial management in meeting an organization’s objectives. They should be able to interpret financial statements and understand the financial state of organizations. They should be able to prepare business plan, compute working capital and its role in organizations. They should be able to appraise and select the most appropriate sources of fund and understand the role of financial management in an organization.

IMF208 Dangerous Goods Management

As SCM addresses all categories of goods and services, this course draws attention of students to the management of goods classified as dangerous. It addresses the following: Roles and Responsibilities of the Parties in the Transport Chain, Safety and Security Requirements, Dangerous Goods Regulations and Classification, Marking and Handling of Hazardous Cargo, and ISPS and IMDG Codes. Learning Outcomes At the end of this course, students should be able to understand safety and its importance in the transportation of dangerous goods. The students should be able to understand the main responsibilities of the parties involved in the transport chains. They should know the importance of in-house policy and risk management.

IMF209 Research Methodology

This course deals with the following: An Overview of Research procedures, Choice of Research Topics, Research Design, Data Collection and Organization, Data Analysis and Interpretations, and Research Report. Learning Outcomes Students should be able to acquire cognate knowledge of the research process to enable them undertake a study that will lead to a meaningful contribution to the development and practice of SCM.

IMF210 Sociology of Supply Chain Management

This course deals with a description of the concept of supply chain management from sociological perspectives, with a focus on the following: the Origin and Development of Supply Chain Management, Human Relations in Supply Chain Management, Socio-Cultural Values Affecting the Practice of Supply Chain Management, and the Role of Supply Chain Management in Human Society. Learning Outcomes Students should be able to understand the essence of supply chain management in human society and the dynamics of human relations in supply chain management. They should understand the process of conflict management in supply chain management.

IMF211 Law and Insurance

Every human endeavour is governed by one set of rules or another. This course addresses the legal aspects of SCM, with a focus on the following: International and National Trade Laws and Conventions, Laws Governing SCM in the Maritime Environment, Air Transportation and Terrestrial Modes of Transportation, Obligations and Liabilities of Service Provider, Obligations and Liabilities of Consignees and Consignors, Roles and Responsibilities of Insurance Companies, Insurance Policies and Liabilities. Learning Outcomes Students should be acquainted with the status, structure and role of the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) as the government agency responsible for regulating freight forwarding services and supply chain management in Nigeria. They should be aware of the legal guidelines governing the practice of SCM.
